What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a common and serious disease that affects both dogs and cats. While dogs with diabetes typically suffer from Type I diabetes, cats are more likely to suffer from Type II diabetes. In most cases, cats with Type II diabetes are still able to produce insulin, but their bodies don’t use it effectively. Common causes for this response include insulin resistance or a persistent delay in the secretion of insulin.
Signs of Diabetes in Cats
While diabetes in cats can be hard to spot, there are a few telltale signs. If your cat is showing signs of excessive thirst, urinating more than normal, losing weight, or acting lethargic, they could be diabetic. Cats with diabetes may also have a poor coat, suffer from skin infections, and have a ravenous appetite. If you notice any of these signs in your cat, it's time to see the vet.
What Causes Diabetes in Cats?
While we don’t have a definitive answer as to what causes diabetes in cats, there are a few risk factors that are known to increase the chances of a cat developing the disease. These risk factors include obesity, long-term physical inactivity, and exposure to glucocorticoids (a common treatment for feline asthma). Underlying health issues, such as Cushing's disease or chronic pancreatitis, have also been linked to the development of diabetes in cats.
How We Treat Diabetes in Cats
At our practice, we take a comprehensive approach to treating diabetes in cats. In addition to insulin therapy, which is often necessary to regulate blood sugar levels, we also work with our feline patients on weight loss and increased activity. In many cases, a change in diet may also be necessary to combat the symptoms of Type II diabetes.
If your cat requires insulin injections, we'll make sure to take the time to show you how to properly administer them. We understand that caring for a diabetic cat can be daunting, but we'll be there to support you every step of the way. With proper treatment, most cats with diabetes can live long, active, and happy lives.
